The Crimean Human Rights Group submitted to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights the Input regarding the impact of disinformation on the enjoyment of cultural rights in situations of armed conflicts.
The Crimean Human Rights Group has documented violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in the context of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine since 2014. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, disinformation around the armed conflict has become one of the priorities of the documentation efforts by the Crimean Human Rights Group.
The Crimean Human Rights Group in its Input argues that disinformation campaign launched, supported and allowed by the state aiming to deprecate or outright deny the existence of Ukrainian culture often prevents individuals and communities from accessing and engaging in and contributing to cultural life.
The Crimean Human Rights Group recommends the UN Committee to recognize disinformation as an instrument employed by governments to infringe on the right to take part in cultural life; to encourage monitoring and documentation of the relevant disinformation; and to strengthen protection of cultural rights through ensuring access to accurate information.
This Input has been drafted by the Crimean Human Rights Group in collaboration with Anna Mykytenko, the lawyer specializing in international criminal and international humanitarian law.
